Baby caterpillar
A lot of caterpillars, moths and butterflies have eyespots to mimic larger animals and scare off predators. This little fellow is the first caterpillar we've seen that successfully mimics a cute li'l puppy to soften the heart of any predator.

not to burst anyone's bubble, but the "face" you are looking at on this baby caterpiller is actually the back side used to scare off prediters. the actual "face" is on the other end.

I saw on the news a couple weeks ago, how some guy found one in his yard. he thought it was a toy until it started crawling. I think it's cute!
Whoa ! I saw one just like this except for color (soft brown) and he looked more mature . . . just trucking along my balcony railing. Yup, when I got close he stuck his 'posterior' end straight up - puffed it up larger than before - and seemingly stood up, with that scary, yet comic "face" to frighten me away. I was mesmerized, but would love to know what type of moth he'll become, if anyone has a clue ? Thanks !
